Minbalup Kindy Room News November 2017

Outings

The Kindy room regularly has visits to the Aberfoyle Hub Library for story-time. Jacqui from the library reads books for us and we sing songs together. We enjoy the different stories about animals and we also take part in the events like Simultaneous Storytime and Book Week. This year the book The Cow that Tripped Over the Moon – award winning picture book by Tony Wilson and Laura Wood was read and acted out by puppetry. Our children are encouraged to engage with the stories, re-read and familiarise themselves with the fabulous texts.

We also have regular walks to the local oval, where we practice our ball skills, enjoy group games and practice joining in physical exercises. Our regular walks also give us opportunities to practice our road safety by wearing safety vests, talking about walking on the footpath, stopping and crossing roads. These walks also allow us to get to know our local surrounding and notice many natural environmental changes, eg: leaves, flowers, seasons and the weather.

A few times we have found the oval too muddy so we went to the playground next to it. The children seemed to enjoy the different climbing and challenge of new equipment.

The pre-school invited us to visit them during book week to read and talk about books,. Whilst there, the children got the opportunity to play and experience some of the pre-school toys and activities.

Emergent Curriculum

We are continuing to use the emergent curriculum model to guide our children’s learning and interests. The past six months we have had a focus on Belonging and Being (Identity), and physical movement. These two areas have been the focal group for where learning and development can take us on a web line and from the children’s own input.

Little Scientist

Erin and Petah have begun training in ways to incorporate science into our program using WATER as the start of our subjects. We have set up an area by the window attached to the Toddler room to display the children’s thinking, questioning, hypothesize to research further and document our findings. Water will be followed by AIR and OPTICS, LIGHT, COLOUR, and VISION. Please have a chat to Erin or Petah if you would like further information about this undertaking.
